STEM Club – Winter & Spring 2018

Does your child have an interest in robots, enjoy building and tinkering, or is a LEGO fanatic? Then the CMV STEM Club is for them! The CMV STEM Club is for participants ages 6 – 12 and all ability levels. The goal is to increase critical thinking skills of each participant through hands-on projects and challenges. Students work in teams to explore and solve real – world and hypothetical challengers.

What:
STEM Club at the Children’s Museum of VA
6 – 8 Year Old Sessions; 9 – 12 Year Old Sessions

When:
3rd Saturday (6 – 8 year olds) from 9:30 – 11 am 4th Saturday (9 – 12 year olds) from 9:30 am – 12 pm

Sessions for 6 – 8 year olds:
9:30 – 11 am January 20th February 17th March 17th April 21st

Sessions for 9 – 12 year olds:
9:30 am – 12 pm January 27th February 24th March 24th April 28th.

Cost:
Museums Members: $15.00 (6 – 8 year olds) $54* (per session) $25.00 (9 – 12 year olds) $90*
Non – Members: $20.00 (6 – 8 year olds) $72* $30.00 (9 – 12 year olds) $108*

January 20th – How do you Robot?

Start learning and loving robots with Ozobot Bit. Ozobots are not only fun but educational as participants are introduced to the basic steps of coding and programming. Participants learn how Ozobot senses its environment and moves in it. Explore and discover how to give commands to Ozobots via OzoCodes, which is the color code language that Ozobot understands. Participants also learn how to control Ozobot with directional OzoCode commands. Lastly, math – based concepts are taught through mazes and design challenges.

February 17th – littleBits Simple Circuits

Spark your imagination and invent anything with littleBits. littleBits are easy-to-use, electronic building blocks that light – up, buzz and even vibrate! They are color-coded, magnetic and reusable. Learn the basics of electronics, explore STEAM/STEM principles, form the foundations of critical thinking, and just have fun!

April 21st – 3Doodler Printing Pen3DoodlerStart4

Ever wanted to bring an imaginative idea to life in 3D? The 3Doodler Start is a 3D printing pen that inspires creativity, design, planning, building and spatial understanding. The 3D printed creations are not hot to touch and completely safe to use. This 3D printing pen melts plastic that cools and hardens rapidly, allowing participants to literally draw in the air!

April 28th – Modular Cube Robots

Build and experiment with robotics in a new way. The MOSS robot construction system allows you to design and build robots that snap together without the need for programming or wires. Steel spheres are used to connect blocks and build simple circuits that determine how your robot will behave.
