3-5 Year Old Camps

Early childhood development thrives on activities that offer divergent thinking, motor skills, wondering, and curiosity. Our camps cover a variety of environments that offer hands-on learning and introductions to art, history, science and more.

6-8 Year Old Camps

Middle childhood learning begins to focus on the development of cognitive and physical skills. Our camps at this age group several outlets of learning that allows campers to build explorative curiosity, self-confidence, and social skills.

9-12 Year Old Camps

Pre-teens begin to see the world with more complex thinking and have already defined genuine interests in a number of subjects. Our camps for this age group focus on fun and engagement to help foster hands-on independence, explorative learning and more advanced skills and reasoning.

3-5 YEAR OLD CAMPS

World Adventures

June 25-29, 10-11 a.m.
Age: 3-5 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia
Cost: Members $50 / Non-members $55

Campers create a “passport” on day one and travel around the world exploring different places using crafts, songs, books, etc from different nations.  At the end of the day children will write a postcard home about their adventure.

The Terrific World of Turtles & Tortoises!

July 23-27, 10-11 a.m.
Age: 3-5 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia
Cost: Members $50 / Non-members $55

Do you know the difference between a turtle and a tortoise? Do you ever wonder what it might be like to travel everywhere with your home? In this companion camp to our “Turtle Travels” exhibit, preschoolers will learn all about these neat reptiles and their way of life.

6-8 YEAR OLD CAMPS

Eco Art

June 25-29, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Age: 6-8 Year Olds
Location: Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center
Members: $65 half day, $135 full day

In this environmentally inspired camp, explore the intersection of art and nature while learning about contemporary eco-artists and creating their own artworks using found natural materials and processes.  Examples include sun prints, relief printing, and time-based sculpture.

You can combine this Eco Art Camp with the S.T.E.M. Studio Camp for a full day of adventure.

S.T.E.M. Studio Camp

June 25-29, 1-4 p.m.
Age: 6-8 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia

Spend a week immersed in STEM – engineering and problem solving challenges. Learn the basic steps of coding & programing by exploring robotics with Ozobots and Cube Robots. Explore the technology of 3D printing with a 3Doodler 3D printing pen and get a chance to tinker with LEGOS & Little Bits circuits.

You can combine this S.T.E.M. Studio Camp with the Eco Art Camp for a full day of adventure.

Can You Build It LEGO® Camp

Consider yourself a LEGO® Enthusiast? Power up your engineering skills with thousands of LEGO®!  Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as bridges, skyscrapers, and motorized vehicles!

You can combine this LEGO® Camp with the Beginners Architect Camp for a full day of adventure.

Beginner Architects

Explore, imagine, design, build and play!  Campers are introduced to the creative process of designing, building and decorating structures.  Time will also be spent exploring examples of historical architecture in the surrounding neighborhood.

Powhatan Discovery Camp

Aug 13-17, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Age: 6-8 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia

Explore how the Powhatans lived within their environment by using replica artifacts and tools, playing games of the time, and play the roles of both the Powhatan and English newcomer.

You can combine this Powhatan Discovery Camp with the Art From Scratch Camp for a full day of adventure.

Art From Scratch

Aug 13-17, 1-4 p.m.
Age: 6-8 Year Olds
Location: Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center

In this DIY-inspired camp, explore art making by first creating your own art supplies.  From paint to clay and everything in between, make all the materials used, and store them projects in a handmade portfolio.

You can combine this Art From Scratch Camp with the Powhatan Discovery Camp for a full day of adventure.

9-12 YEAR OLD CAMPS

Creative Thunder Drums

July 16-20, 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

Age: 9-12 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia
Members: $65 half day, $135 full day

This camp will teach the tradition of West African Mandingue djembe (jim-bay) and dunun (due-noon) drumming by using silly-syllabic expressions and fun math to teach simple rhythm patterns.

Street Art

July 16-20, 1-4 p.m.

Age: 9-12 Year Olds
Location: Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center

Explore all the ways art has been taken to the streets in a positive and respectful way.  Campers discover public art including chalk art, stenciling, murals, wheat paste, and sticker art and contemporary street artists including Keith Haring, Bansky and others.

Fabulous Fibers

July 30-Aug 3, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.

Explore the fabulous world of fibers through a range of projects including weaving, dyeing, printing and embroidery.

Detective Science

July 30- Aug 3, 1-4 p.m.

Age: 9-12 Year Olds

Step into the shoes of a detective – uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Discover how detectives use science to uncover the mysteries of a crime. Solve different types of cases using clues and conduct biotechnology experiments dealing with forensics, investigation, fingerprinting and more.

You can combine this Detective Science Camp with the Fabulous Fibers Camp for a full day of adventure.

Drones!

August 6-10, 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

Age: 9-12 Year Olds
Location: Children’s Museum of Virginia

Campers will learn the basics of drone technology and safety before taking to the air to fly and code the drones. Through the use of iPad flight simulators and clear instructions on basic flying maneuvers, campers will experience a program filled with excitement, games, challenges, and learning.

Jr. Architects

August 6-10, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Imagine, design, and build!  Campers delve into what makes a structure unique and have the opportunity to create their own style.  Time will also be spent exploring historical architecture in the surrounding neighborhood.
